Want a quality goggle at a great price AND support a local Arizona business? Check out the Try Out on the Reckoning goggle by Roost Motorsports.
I do not know if anyone in motocross has ever said that vision is overrated. If it was, we would not need goggles to protect our peepers. And when it comes to protection there is a whole lot of choices out there with a whole lot of price points to consider, of course to manage business we need to know the difference between legal vs illegal paystubs as these are important when we receive payments.
So when I got the opportunity to try out Roost Motorsports’ 2022 Reckoning goggle, it was an easy choice because they are local. And it was an even more of a no brainer considering their price point isn’t going to break the bank. But hopefully that is all that will not break in this Try Out.
Roost Motorsports is veteran owned by Colin Krabbe. Based in Maricopa AZ, you probably have seen their rig at the local tracks and off road race events supporting their growing stable of riders.
The Reckoning comes in a standard goggle box you would find on any retail shelf and comes with a branded goggle bag for storage. Pulling it out of the bag you can get a good sense of the quality. The foam does not feel too firm or rough to the touch and the included nose guard is ample enough to protect a larger than average schnoz. And another thing that is usually found in a premium goggle line, outriggers!
Fitment
Pulling the strap up and over the helmet and placing it just right (I ain’t no low strap rider), I know it will stay in place. The 45mm wide strap has a few rows of silicon to ensure that strap stays in place. And it works. Once in place you can’t slide it around to adjust, you need to lift it and place it. That’s a nice feeling knowing that the strap will be in the same spot after the moto as it was when it started.
I wear an Alpinstars M10 which already comes with an extended nose guard. The Reckoning would not fit with their nose guard in place so with an easy tug I was able to remove it. Once gone the triple layer foam rested comfortably against my face. With the larger shells of today’s helmets, lesser goggles will not seal around your face. There is a small gap that will allow dirt to find their way in. Premium goggles have an outrigger system that allows the strap to pull the goggle to your face. And that is exactly what the Reckoning’s rigger style strap mounts do. I had no issue of having a gap between the foam and my delicate skin. The Reckoning fit snugly and comfortably around my eyes.
Vision
With the strap firmly in place around my helmet and the goggle secured against my face, what am I looking at? Just about everything. The Reckoning’s field of vision was not obstructed or narrowed at all. I did not get the sides creeping into my periphery distracting me while riding. It was a sunny day with no clouds in the sky (aren’t all of Arizona’s days like that?) and the smoke lens was just the right among of smoke. Even getting in the first laps of the day with the sun low in the eastern sky I did not have to dip my head to use my visor to shield my eyes. When the sun got higher in the October sky my vision was perfect. I could see every bump I was trying to avoid, every rut I missed by braking too late, and the name and number of every rider that passed me. If it was an overcast day the smoke lens may be too dark and a clear lens a better choice. Both clear and smoke lenses are specially made of anti-scratch, uv-protected material.
While Riding
Although we were not in the dead of summer and the temps were cooler by Arizona standards, I was still putting in some work on the track working up a sweat. As I mentioned above the Reckoning was firm across my brow and over the bridge of my nose. The triple layer foam was doing its work and keeping everything below the eyebrows dry and free from sweat. There is an internal flow system with 10 vents to allow ample air flow (six vents up top and four vents below). There were no issues of fogging and should any perspiration start to show it was quickly wicked away.
I would not be doing my job if I didn’t check to see if the Reckoning did the one job a goggle has: stop a stone spray sandwich. I got in behind a couple riders and waited for them to twist the wrist. I must admit, my innate sense of self preservation kicked in and I did duck my head a few times, but I did try to stay in the splash zone. The Reckoning’s did their job and kept my vision binocular and 20/20. Bottom line, they kept the dirt out and my eyes focusing forward.
Misc
The Reckoning does have tear offs available. They are 10 packs and are of good quality. The lenses include the tear off posts built in but the thickness of the tearoffs may preclude a large number being stacked on. One concern is each individual tear off has a protective film on both sides that needs to be removed. The package actually states, “remove protective film from both sides before install”. It was tricky and I had to use a razor blade to kind of pick up the edge enough on both sides to grab and peel off. The good news is Roost is switching manufacturers at the end of the year to get away from the protective film and will also be adding laminate stacks to their tear off options.
Conclusion
Roost Motorsports’ Reckoning is a goggle that can rival the big guys and all at a reasonable price. It is a big bonus to us Arizona riders as they are local (Maricopa) and highly visible at the track for support. They are also growing their dealer network for easy shopping. All items are available on their website too and are at a price point for any racer/rider on a budget. The Reckoning is highly recommended for those who want a premium goggle without the premium price.
